Welcome to the Quartermaster section of the 2nd Jäger Battalion. Here you will find information on the uniforms, gear and weapons used by the typical Finnish soldier during the Continuation War. This section isn't meant to be an exhaustive study of ALL uniforms, gear and weapons issued to the Finnish soldier. Rather it is focused rather precisely on the TYPICAL bits of kit and uniforms issued to a Finnish soldier during the Continuation War. The information gathered here is from many sources, both online and off with special emphasis being laid on hundreds of original photographs of Finnish troops taken during the War. All the research is accurate to our knowledge and any more information or corrections are highly welcomed.
Our Impression: Tali-Ihantala 1944
Below are a few pictures depicting our ideal impression, that of a Jäger during the battles of the Summer of 1944. There is a more detailed description of the uniforms, weapons and equipment depicted below the picture. Individual descriptions of the items in the photographs can be found in the appropriate section on this website as are the order of importance in acquisition by new recruits.
This is your typical 2nd Jäger impression. He is wearing the M/36 pattern Summer tunic and imported German M/40 pattern wool trousers. His belt consists of a standard 2 prong belt, highly darkened brown (almost black) and a puukko knife. Also on his belt is a rubberized canvas improvised three pocket ammo pouch for his M91 rifle. Draped across his shoulders is his gasmask bag, usually filled with spare ammo and food, and his breadbag on which he has strapped on his messtin and canteen. His helmet is a Hungarian imported M38 and he wears standard Finnish Army issue Jackboots.
This Jäger belongs to a tank hunting squad. His basic kit is typical for a Jäger, though he has lightened his load considerably to aid his primary task: stalking Soviet tanks. On his shoulder he carries a German made Pansarikki F.1 (Faust Patronen) and the ubiquitous Kp/31 Submachine Gun. On his belt he wears simply his breadbag and his puukko knife while an extra drum magazine for his Kp/31 Suomi is hung off his etool hook.
